When to order for Christmas

Start with timing, because it decides what you can buy. A piece that is already made only needs to be packed and shipped. A handmade chain or a custom pendant has to be made first.

Ready-to-ship orders are processed after payment is verified and go out on our next shipping day: Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Each listing shows its own processing time. After that, expedited delivery usually takes 2 to 3 business days, and overnight is available at checkout. Production times are estimates, so the November 13 date leaves room for making and shipping. If you are past it, choose a ready-to-ship piece.

Gold gifts by budget

Each row shows the heaviest ready-to-ship piece that fits the budget at a common size: a 22-inch chain and an 8-inch bracelet, in yellow gold. Weight is the listed weight on the product page, so it is the clearest way to see how much gold you are giving.

1. A Cuban link chain

Cuban link chains were our top-selling category last holiday season. There are three ways to buy one as a gift:

• Machine-made, 3mm to 6mm, ready to ship. Most Cubans from 3mm to 6mm are machine-made. Ours are solid gold in 10K, 14K and 18K, from 16 to 26 inches, and the 4mm to 6mm chains close with a box lock. See the 3mm to 6mm Cuban chains.
• Handmade, ready to ship. A small set of handmade Miami Cuban chains is already finished: 7mm to 10mm, 10K and 14K, about 77.8 to 186.6 g each. Most sizes are a single piece, so once one sells it is gone. Handmade 6mm Miami Cubans come in small, limited batches and have their own listing (10K, 50.0 to 60.2 g, as of November 4).
• Handmade to order, 7mm to 16mm. From 7mm up, our Cubans are handmade in Miami and take 3 to 4 weeks. For Christmas, order by November 13 from the handmade Cuban collection.

Length: our ready-to-ship handmade chains are mostly 22 and 24 inches. If you are between two lengths, choose the longer one. Shortening takes a day or two; adding length means making a new chain. To compare widths and weights side by side, use our Cuban link chain weight chart.

2. A Cuban bracelet

A bracelet is the easier gift to size and the easier one to fit a budget. Under $1,000, a 4mm 10K Cuban bracelet weighs about 8.4 g. Our machine-made Cuban bracelets run 3mm to 6mm in 10K and 14K, 7 to 9 inches, all ready to ship. For a heavier piece, the handmade ready-to-ship bracelets are 8mm to 11mm, about 37.4 to 84.2 g (November 4). Wider handmade bracelets are made to order: order by November 13.

Size without asking him: measure a bracelet or watch he already wears, or measure his wrist snugly with a strip of paper. 3. A rope or Franco chain

If he already owns a Cuban, a rope or Franco chain is the different look. Both are ready to ship in solid yellow gold. Rope chains run from 2mm to 15mm in 10K and 14K, from 16 to 30 inches; a 2mm 10K rope at 20 inches comes in under $1,000. You will also see hollow rope chains. They cost less for the same width because there is less gold inside. They are genuine 10K or 14K gold, but not solid, and they are lighter in the hand.

4. A pendant that means something

A pendant is the most personal gift on this list: his name, his faith, his service or a symbol he already lives by. Most of our gold pendants, including the custom dog tag and name pieces, are made to order in 4 to 5 weeks, so order those by November 13. 5. A solid 24K gold band

For the man who wants pure gold: 24K is 99.9% gold, and most jewelry stores don’t carry solid 24K rings. Our solid 24K gold rings run from 4mm to 13mm, including 1-ounce bands. In size 10, a 4mm band lists at about 8.9 g and an 8mm flat band at about 19.6 g; a 1 oz band is 31.1 g of gold, worth about $3,926 at today’s gold price. 10K or 14K for a gift?

10K costs less for the same width and length, and it is a little harder, which suits a chain worn every day. 14K holds more gold per gram and has a richer yellow. For a big handmade Cuban, 10K gets you more width for the money; for a thinner chain or bracelet, 14K adds color without a large price step. Either way, the stamp and the listed weight tell you exactly what you are buying.
