Quick Answer

In GOLDZENN's own catalog, a 22-inch solid 14K gold Cuban link chain weighs about 85 g at 7 mm, 170 g at 10 mm and 245 g at 12 mm. Weight rises with the square of the width and in direct proportion to the length, and the same chain in 18K weighs about 20% more than in 14K because 18K gold is denser. Every figure below is an estimate from our live product listings and can vary by about ±5% on a handmade piece. Melt values use the live gold price.

Key Takeaways
  • Width matters most: doubling the width of a Cuban link roughly quadruples its weight. In our catalog, weight scales with width to the power of 2.01 (a perfect square would be exactly 2).
  • Length is linear: each extra inch adds the same number of grams (exponent 1.00 across the catalog). A 24-inch chain weighs about 9% more than a 22-inch one of the same width and karat.
  • Karat changes weight: at the same size, 18K weighs about 20% more than 14K and 22K about 34% more than 14K, because higher-karat gold is denser. 10K weighs about 9% less than 14K.
  • Handmade tolerance: our product pages disclose a final-weight variation of up to ±5% on handcrafted Cuban links; use the numbers as a close estimate, not a guarantee to the gram.
  • Gold content is separate from price: melt value below is only the raw gold in the chain at today's price. It is not a retail price.

Cuban Link Chain Weight Chart (Grams)

The four tables below list the estimated weight, in grams, of every handmade solid gold Cuban link chain size in the GOLDZENN catalog, as read from live product listings on October 2, 2026. Rows are widths in millimetres; columns are lengths in inches. The last column is the weight-per-inch trend used in the formula further down. The catalog lists the same weight for yellow, white and rose gold.

— means that length is not listed in that karat. A dagger (†) marks a catalog weight that sits more than 7% away from the width-and-length trend; those are shown as listed, not smoothed, so confirm the exact weight with us before you order. Weights are estimates for handmade pieces (about ±5%).

How to Read the Chart and Estimate Any Size

Find your width in the left column, then read across to your length. That number is the estimated weight in grams of the whole chain, clasp included in the listing weight. A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram; for reference one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams and one pennyweight (dwt) is 1.5552 grams.

If you want a size that is between rows, use the catalog trend: weight in grams ≈ k × width² × length, with width in millimetres, length in inches and k set by karat.

Karat k (g per mm² per inch) Pure gold share
10K 0.0699 41.7%
14K 0.0770 58.3%
18K 0.0937 75%
22K 0.1033 91.7%

Example: a 10 mm chain, 24 inches, 14K gives 0.0770 × 10² × 24 = about 185 g; the catalog lists 185 g. Across all 220 catalog sizes in this resource the formula lands within ±5% for 162 of them and within ±7% for 198, with a median gap of 2.2%.

Why Width Matters More Than Length

A Cuban link is a solid piece of gold shaped into interlocking links. Make every link twice as wide and, because the links also thicken in proportion, you get four times the gold in each inch of chain. Make the chain twice as long and you simply get twice as many links. That is why, across our catalog (33 width-by-karat series for length and 28 karat-by-length series for width), weight grows almost exactly linearly with length (median exponent 1.00) and with width to the power of about 2.01.

Practical result: stepping from 8 mm to 12 mm is a 1.5× increase in width but about 2.25× the gold. If a chain feels too heavy, dropping one or two millimetres saves more weight than shortening it by several inches.

Melt Value: What the Gold in a Chain Is Worth Today

Melt value is the value of the pure gold inside a piece at the live gold price, using its weight and karat. It does not include craftsmanship, design, the clasp work or retail margin, so it is a floor for understanding what you are buying, not a price quote. The figures below use the live price per gram for each karat and refresh automatically.

Same karat, different widths: 14K, 22 inches
Width Est. weight Pure gold content Melt value today
7 mm 85 g 50 g $6,579
9 mm 130 g 76 g $10,062
10 mm 170 g 99 g $13,158
12 mm 245 g 143 g $18,963
13 mm 292 g 170 g $22,601
Same size, different karats: 10 mm, 22 inches
Karat Est. weight Gold price per gram Melt value today
10K 145 g $55.36 $8,027
14K 170 g $77.40 $13,158
18K 206 g $99.57 $20,511
22K 227 g $121.74 $27,635

Worked example: a 170 g 14K chain contains about 99 g of pure gold. At today's 14K price of $77.40 per gram, the gold in it is worth $13,158.00. The formula is simply weight × karat price per gram; for the chain's listed price, see its product page.

Which Length Fits Where

Length is measured around the whole chain. This is the fit guidance from our own product sizing guide, with centimetre equivalents.

Length Centimetres Where it sits
18″ 45.7 Rests at the collarbone; a classic, understated look.
20″ 50.8 Falls just below the collarbone; works for pendants or layering.
22″ 55.9 Lands on the upper chest; a noticeable yet versatile length.
24″ 61 Sits mid-chest; makes a stronger statement.
26″ 66 Long and stylish; stands out solo or layered.
28″ 71.1 Falls lower on the chest; bold and elevated.
30″ 76.2 Full length; attention-grabbing and luxurious.

Thicker chains hang and feel heavier at the same length, so many buyers go one size shorter when they move up in width. You can find the weights for those combinations in the chart above.

Method, Data and Last Updated

  • Source: estimated weights are read directly from the live product variants of the active GOLDZENN solid gold Cuban link chain listings (handmade, made to order, 7 mm to 15 mm in 10K, 14K and 18K, and 7 mm to 14 mm in 22K): 17 listings and 220 width, length and karat combinations.
  • Last updated: October 2, 2026. Weights can change if a listing is revised; the live product page is always the reference for the piece you are ordering.
  • Tolerance: the Cuban link disclosure on these product pages states that the final weight may vary by up to ±5% because each piece is handcrafted, and the shipping and production notes describe a normal handmade variation of ±5% to ±7%. If a finished piece falls outside the stated range, the difference is settled by refund or additional invoice before shipping.
  • Not included: machine-made 3 mm to 6 mm chains, ready-to-ship pieces, diamond, moissanite, hollow and bonded chains, and any listing without a weight disclosure. These are built or weighed differently and would distort the chart.
  • Trend check: the width, length and karat relationships were fitted to the catalog values and compared with gold density by karat. Where a listed weight is more than 7% from the trend it is flagged with a dagger rather than adjusted.
  • Melt values: computed from the live price per gram for each karat (the same feed used across our gold price guides) multiplied by the weight shown.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 10mm Cuban link chain weigh?

In our catalog, a solid 10 mm Cuban link chain weighs about 154 g at 20 inches, 170 g at 22 inches and 185 g at 24 inches in 14K gold. The same 22-inch chain is 145 g in 10K, 206 g in 18K and 227 g in 22K. Handmade pieces can vary by about ±5%.

How much does a 22 inch solid gold Cuban link chain weigh?

It depends on the width. In 14K, a 22-inch chain is about 85 g at 7 mm, 130 g at 9 mm, 170 g at 10 mm, 245 g at 12 mm and 292 g at 13 mm. The full table is above.

Why does an 18K chain weigh more than a 14K chain of the same size?

Because higher-karat gold is denser. Pure gold is about 19.3 g per cubic centimetre, and the copper, silver or other metals used in lower karats are lighter. In our catalog the same size is about 20% heavier in 18K than in 14K.

Does a wider chain weigh twice as much, or more?

More. Weight rises with the square of the width, so a chain twice as wide has roughly four times the gold. Length is linear: twice as long is twice the weight.

Is yellow, white or rose gold heavier?

In our catalog the listed weight is the same for all three colors at a given width, length and karat. A color difference does not change the weight we list.

How accurate are the weights on this page?

They are estimates for handmade pieces. Our product pages state the final weight may vary by up to ±5% (and describe a normal handmade variation of ±5% to ±7%). If a finished chain falls outside the stated range, we settle it by refund or additional invoice before shipping.

How do I know what the gold in my chain is worth?

Multiply the chain's weight in grams by the price per gram for its karat, shown live at the top of this page. That is the melt value of the gold. It does not include craftsmanship, design or retail margin.

What is the difference between a gram, a pennyweight and a troy ounce?

One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and one pennyweight (dwt) is 1.5552 grams. Spot gold is quoted per troy ounce.

Which length and width should I choose?

Wider chains look and feel heavier, so many buyers pair 7 to 9 mm with 20 to 24 inches and move one size shorter as the width increases. Use the fit table above and call us if you want help choosing.
